BOWLING. During the week-end the Kaponga Bowling Club inaugurated something new in the way of competitions for members, a progress pairs match being played in which some 24 players took part. Included in this number were many visiting players from Opunake, Pihama and Eltham clubs. As time would not permit of the full six rounds being played, it was agreed td play 4 rounds only. At the end of play T. Peat (Opunake), with no losses, was first as lead for the afternoon, but the position for 'the most games won as a. skip resulted in a draw betweenj M. Hickey (Opunake) and F. Julian. By mutual consent it was decided to play each other a short game of three heads to decide the winner. In the first head, Hickey scored two up, but this was evened by Julian scoring two on the second. In th 3 third head Julian held two up before his opponent sent down his last bowl, which was a little bit too fast to touch and trail kitty, which would have given him two up, and the game ended, Julian 4, Hickey 2. . The winners received small trophies as mementoes of their success, and a much appreciated afternoon tea was served by the wife of the president, Mrs. J. A. Dawson. The departure was considered to be a great success, and it is hoped to be able to arrange a similar competition series before the season closes. A start was made last week with play for the championship singles competition when 14 players competed. As-.the competition is being run on different rules this year, one of which is that players have only two lives before being cut altogether, it is hoped to finalise this competition early in the new year. Results of the first draw and round, which concluded on Saturday are:— Singles, O’Neill -23, Champtaloup 21; J. H. Tyack 22, A. W. Anderson 12; N. Gardner 21, W. G. Cran 19; W. Anderson 20, C. Libeau; 19 J. A. Dawson 19, R. E. Williams; 14, V. A. Tait 22, T. J. Hammersley 11; F. W. Fallows 24, A. E. Anderson 18. The draw for the second round of the singles championship which

have to be concluded by the 23rd inst. is as follows:—R. E. Williams v. A. E. Anderson; T. J. Hammersley v. W. G. Cran; A. W. Anderson v. S. Palmer; C. Libeau v. O. Champtaloup; V. Tait v. J. A. Dawson; F. W. Fallows v..W. Anderson; J. H. Tyack v. F. N. Gardner; W. A. O’Neill a bye. The special committee in charge of the Mallow Cups pairs competition has also announced the draw of the first round as follows:— (skips only being named) Tyack v. Cran, Williams v. Gardner, W. R. Anderson v. A. E. Anderson. At a special meeting of the executive committee on Monday evening the resignation of the secretary (Mr. S. Death) was received with regret, and Mr. S. Palmer (subject to his consent) was appointed temporarily to fill the position. Other business dealt with was in connection with matters .regarding the “Christie Shield” which takes place this year on the local green. Personal and General.

Mr. S. Palmer, of the Bank of New Zealand, who has been on his annual vacation, has returned from the North. Misses A. and M. Fary, of Wellington, are visiting their father, Mr. J. Fary. Mr. C. H. Severne, of Auckland, is visiting Kaponga. Mrs. Horrocks, Wellington, is spending a holiday here and staying with her daughter, Mrs. F. W. Fallows. Mr. and Mrs. A. Johnston, of Paraparaumu, and are on a visit to Mr. and Mrs. C. H. Brewer.

Work under number five scheme this week was allotted to two A 5B and 4C class workers. Next week will be stand down week for all men in this centre. Xmas Carnival. Arrangements for the Xmas Carnival ar now complete. Father Xmas »is to arrive in the town at 2.30 on Saturday afternoon, when he will distribute toys to the children. At three o’clock there is to be a free picture matinee at the town hall.
