AFFAIRS OF HOSPITAL

PURCHASE OF THE AMBULANCE.

TREATMENT FOR QUARRY MEN.

The monthly meeting of the Stratford Hospital Board was tyeld yesterday, those present being Messrs. W. L. Kennedy (chairman), M. Gemhoefer, L. Bunn,.T. R. Anderson, G. P. Harkness, J. Cormick and Mesdames D. Shannon and M. T. Phillips. The Nurses and Midwives’ Registration Board advised that the number of cases and the general clinical material available at the Stratford Hospital were, insufficient to justify the board in continuing its approval of the hospital as an A grade training school. During the coming year the question of. regrading it to B would have to be considered.—Referred to the medical superintendent.

Quarry men employed on the Mangao-apa-Matau quarry offered to pay 2s. 6d. each monthly to the board in return for free hospital treatment if necessary. The secretary said he had asked for the number of men who would subscribe. The offer was accepted. The motor firm from which the ambulance was purchased forwarded confirmation of the deal.

“I think that the other firms should have a chance to tender,” Mrs. Phillips said.

“They did,” said the chairman. Mr. Bunn said that though the ambulance question was discussed in committee people in the town knew what was done at the meeting. He thought members should respect the confidence of committee work. The 'motor firms had ample opportunity to tender but they missed their opportunity and were trying to excuse themselves at the expense, of the board.

Mr. Cormick pointed out that whenever a meeting was held in committee people besides the members, knew shortly afterwards what had happened. That sort of thing was not peculiar to Stratford. No action was taken.

The Director-General of Health (Dr. M. H. Watt) notified that there appeared to be no possibility of the board being able to secure a refund, of Customs duty on the ambulance.

The patients admitted during the month numbered 44, stated the superintendent (Dr. D. Steven), discharged 46, died 1, remaining 28, out-patients attended 1, admissions to maternity ward 8, births 8, visits to ante-natal clinic 49, eperations 15. Senility was the cause of the death.

The. matron (Mrs. J. Hunt) reported on a number of staff movements and stated that the half-yearly hospital examinations were held this month, when all the candidates passed. Nurses Moore and Sandford completed cookery instruction and passed the examination with honours. Mrs. Hunt sought permission to purchase one book a month for the nurses’ library. The regulations required that all training schools should have such a library. The matron’s request was agreed to, the books to be purchased from the Sanders bequest. ELTHAM COURT JUDGMENTS.
