BYRD EXPEDITION PROGRESS
LOOK-OUT FOR ICEBERGS DOUBLED “DAIRY FARMING” IN ANTARCTIC. (Special to Press Association.) Aboard Jacob Ruppert, Dec. 17. The Byrd expedition members enjoyed a novel experience, • having two Thursdays on December 14, when they crossed the 180th meridian on that date. Since then the ship has made good cruising time, on Friday being 1200 miles from Wellington, a fresh north-westerly wind aiding it. The expedition passed through the Roaring Forties without mishap. The barometer is now falling and indicates a possible storm. The low temperatures have caused the look-out fcr icebergs to be doubled. What is attracting interest is the fact that the Guernsey cow, named Klondike, is an expectant mother. There is considerable difference of opinion among the cow handlers and others when the interesting event may be expected. All agree that it will be within the Antarctic Circle, thus giving Klondike immortality within the bovine world comparable to that of Mrs. O’Leary’s cow, which kicked over a lantern and started the great Chicago fire.
