RUM-RUNNING PREVENTION
NAVY ORDERED TO CO-OPERATE. CHALLENGE TO THE AUTHORITIES. By Telegraph—Press Assn.—Copyright. Washington, Dec. 15. The Government has ordered the Navy to co-operate with the coastguard in stopping rum running on the Pacific Coast. This step was taken in reply to what the Government regarded as a challenge to its law enforcement facilities by a freighter lying off the Californian coast with liquor cargo.
A firm of shipping agents telegraphed the Government that the British freighter Mogul, lying off the west coast laden with approximately 40,000 cases of Canadian and European liquors, desired entry to'the port of Los Angeles to place the merchandise in the warehouse subject to its sale in accordance with the liquor import quotas. The message declared that if the cargo were landed smuggling would cease in six months, as otherwise the liquor was destined to be landed illicitly. The Government in rejecting the offer declared that it was prepared to guard all coasts against rum running.
