Mr. Neville Chamberlain, Chancellor of the Exchequer, at Halifax said there was every hope the current financial year would produce a substantial surplus. “Although I do not see a reason why unemployment should not continue to decrease,” Mr. Chamberlain said, “I believe the truth of my statement that we should not reduce it to really small proportions for ten years is being recognised. I made the statement because I wanted employers and workers to ascertain by discussion whether it is possible to share the work more widely without unemployment is to continue it must draw up a permanent scheme to meet the new unpleasant conditions.” “I want the public to realise that if unduly increasing costs.
