SCHOOL EVENTS COMMENCED. KERN INTEREST DISPLAYED. The great popularity of tennis was shown at the commencement of the Hawera club’s annual tournament on Saturday. when the school events were commenced. SECONDARY DEPARTMENT PASSES.

Under the auspices of the New Zea-, land Red Cross Society, the following candidates from the secondary department of the Hawera Convent school were successful in recent home nursing examinations: Patricia Rodgers, Erin Sheehan, Margaret Harrington 90 per cent., Norah Boyle, Patricia Quayle, Eileen Garvey, Imelda Buckley, Margaret Brown over 80 per cent, Agnes Morgan, Betty Donald, Junne Goodwin, Agnes McKenna, Sheila O’Brien over 75 per cent. WAVERLEY DISTRICT NEWS.

TOWN BOARD MEETING.

At the monthly meeting of the Waverley Town Board on Thursday Mr. A. J. Adlam presided. Dog taxes were fixed at 2s 6d* for sheep and cattle dogs and 10s for all other dogs. Mr. J. Salter -was appointed tax collector. It was decided that a special meeting of the board should be held on January 11 to fix the day for Waverley’s halfholiday Hext year. The same members sitting as the Waverley Domain Board, decided that a recommendation be put before the Minister of Lands that in view of the present economic situation rent of the Domain section should be reduced to £1 Is per acre for the next three years. i » St. Andrews’ Church.

The annual meeting of members of St Andrews’ Presbyterian Church was held during the week, the Rev. H. Stuart presiding over a fair attendance. The reports and balance sheets of the church, the sunday school, the Mission Union, the Girls’ Auxiliary and of the Bible Class were passed. , Votes of thanks were accorded the secretary, the treasurer and all the members of the committee.

WHENUAKURA SCHOOL BREAK-UP.

PRESENTATION OF YEAR’S PRIZES.

The end of the Whenuakura school’s year was marked with a concert and prize-giving, a large number of parents attending. Apologies for non attendance were received from Mr. E. F. Hemingway, chairman of the Wanganui Education Board, Mr. T. -Hurley, school committee chairman, and Mrs. Hurley. After the concert programme afternoon tea was served by the senior scholars. Mr. J. A. Wither, head teacher, expressed his pleasure at the attendance of so many parents. He asked Mrs. F. Parsons to present the prizes. ! Recipients of prizes were: Joy Wither, Patricia Hurley,. William Mercer, Annis Reardon, Barbara Kiihfuss, Charlotte Waterland, Alan Parsons; sewing prize, Eileen Handley; calf rearing, R. Booker and E. Cousins 1, N. Prout 2, B. Kiihfuss and F. Parsons 3; junior calf rearing, P. Parsons 1, M. Hurley 2; mangolds, W. Waterland 1, P. Hurley 2, W. Rees 3; swedes, N. Prout 1, W. Wyboume 2, L. Hughes 3; carrots, F. Parsons. Each scholar was presented with a book. PATEA PERSONAL ITEMS. Mr. Ewing, Raurimu, has taken up his duties at the Patea post office, Mr. Ansford having been transferred to Raurimu. Mr. V. Nansett has returned from sick leave spent at Palmerston North. Mr. G. Willis, who recently underwent a serious operation in the Patea hospital, is reported to be progressing favourably. Dr. T. H. Sprott, Bishop of Wellington, is visiting Patea and is staying at the vicarage.
