NEW PLYMOUTH LEAGUE SPORTS. RESULTS FROM WESTERN PARK. The New Plymouth Cycle and Athletic League opened its track season at Western Park last evening. There were close, finishes in most events. Fields were somewhat small in the runnjng and A grade cycling events. J. Norris' was the most successful runner, while C, Lehrke won both of the A grade cycle events. W. Ireland won the B grande, half-mile after a sprint with Reeve and George.’ Officials on duty were: Handicapper and referee, Mr. L. E. Smith;, starter,. Mr. D. George; judges, Messrs. G. M. Beer, W. Yardley, F. E. Or bell and R. Browne; marksmen, Messrs. L. Claffey and R. Wilson; number steward, Mr. A. Gable; secretary, Mr. H. W Bocock. Results are:— Cycling Events.. A grade, one mile: C. Lehrke (60yds) 1, G. Plucke (120) 2, A. Ellis i6oj 3. Time, 2m 19s. Plucke was the leader 100 yards from the line but Lehrke finished well to win by a wheel, with Ellis a length away third. B grade, half-mile: W. Ireland (50yds) 1, A. Reeve (30) 2, D. George (scr) 3. Time, Im 15 l-ss. Also started: R. Goodin (16), L. Stevens (scr), W. Jury (35), D. Stafford (100), A. E. Wood (50), D. Newell (35). Won by half a wheel with a wheel between second and third. Reeve appeared to have the race well in hand on entering the straight but Ireland cam. from the rear with a good dash to collect honours by inches only. B grade scratch race, one mile (points, one for winner of each lap and three for first, two for second and one for third at end of race): L. Stevens 4 points 1, D. George 3 points 2, A. Reeve li points u, R. Goodin J point 4. Time, 2m 345. Also started: D. Newell, N. Knight, W. Jury, D. Stafford and W. Ireland. Stevens won two laps, the second and third . after Reeve had annexed the first, but in the
fourth and final lap George finished well and headed Stevens in the straight to win by a wheel. Reeve and Goodin fought a great finish for third place and after a disagreement between the judges a dead-heat was awarded? A grade, 'one mile, scratch race: C. Lehrke 5 points 1, G. Plucke .2. points 2, H, Eva and A. Ellis 1 point' dead-heat for third. Lehrke proved'his superiority and after Ellis had won the first lap Lehrke went on to win the second and third and staved off; a ■ strong, challenge from G. Plucke in ,the fourth and final lap.' Eva defeated Ellis by inches for third ’points. ’■ Running; „ ; 75 yards: J. Norris (7yds) 1, C. Fox (5) 2, G. Sole (8) 3. Norris early-assumed the lead and won easing up by two yards, Fox defeating Sole by a similar margin, with Tuffery fourth. Time, ” 2-ss. 100 yards: J. Norris 1, C. Fox 2, G. Sole 3. Time, 10 3-ss. Norris again scored easily. Fox just headed Sole a few yards from the line to/gain the place by over two yards. , . ' • ■' , 600 yards: C. Fox 1, G. Tuffery 2, A. E, Wood 3. Time Im 17 4-ss. Eleven started. Fox won in convincing style by over ten yards. Tuffery was a similar distance ahead of Wood and Sole, who finished almost'on terms. -- --- - The next evening sports will be run at the park on Monday and the- following events will be decided: Half and one mile A grade cycle and.mile and a half A grade miss-and-out race, half-mile B grade cycle and one mile miss-and-out race; running, 100yds, 150yds and 880 yds. Nominations for all events close on Friday, pie park is available for training purposes for cyclists on Wednesday and Thursday evenings and on Sunday mornings.
