LYNCHING CONTROVERSY

EX-PRESIDENT TAKES PART GOVERNOR ROLPH REBUKED BONUS MARCH RECALLED VAT JIB OF TROOPS ARGUED By Telegraph—Press Assn.—Copyright. Rec. 5.5 p.m. San Francisco, Nov. 30. Mr. H. Hoover has entered the Hart lynching controversy with a sharp indirect exchange between himself and Mr. Rolph, Governor of California. Yesterday the former President signed a joint statement with a number of educationists and civic leaders at his home at Palo Alto condemning Mr. Rolph’s stand. “I deplore the use of troops against our people,” said Mr. Rolph to-day. “Look at the mess we got into when troops were called out at Washington against the bonus marchers.” This has reference to Mr. Hoover’s eviction of the veterans in the summer of 1932, and drew a sharp counter-statement from Mr. Hoover accusing Mr. Rolph of “gross ignorance of facts” and pointing out that none was shot or otherwise injured. The calling of troops at Washington was done to prevent further bloodshed.
