RAILWAY MANAGEMENT.
The latest figures in regard to the operations of the railways, those for the fourweekly period ending November 11, continue the record of slight recovery in the department’s nett earnings. For the four weeks the gross revenue increased by £33,941, while operating expenses increased by £lB4B. The nett increase of earnings was therefore £32,093. In regard to operating expenses the Railways Board in its annual report upon last year’s working emphasised that while economy was being practised wherever possible It was inevitable that the continuous reduction in working expenses that obtained last year must soon come to an end. The board considered that an increase in operating costs must be anticipated, and its forecast is proving correct. At the same time for the period April 1 to November 11 gross revenue has increased by £51,912 and expenditure has decreased by £45,700, leaving an increased nett revenue of £97,612, compared with the corresponding period last year. Considering that the heaviest output of the producing season has yet to be handled — the source of the railways’ chief earning power—the record for the current financial year is distinctly encouraging. The management -is showing an earnest desire to increase facilities for travel and to keep down costs wherever possible. There is a long way to go before railway earnings can be said to be sufficient to balance the railway accounts. Nevertheless every step on the way is something accomplished.
