A Leeds inventor, Mr. E. H. Hailwood, has designed a new miner’s lamp which, it is claimed, will help to reduce the causes of a disease of the eye known as nystagmus, from which it is estimated that 11.000 miners in Britain are suffering. Medical men are of the opinion that illumination is the preventive of this disease, and the constant discharge of an intensely brilliant light is the main feature of the new lamp. On the ground that he has become a “golf widower,” Julian Bishop, who lives in New York, is seeking a Reno divorce. In his divorce suit, charging cruelty, he declares that his wife, Emelie, “would come home and say, ‘I played 36 holes golf to-day and I am so tired I can hardly hold up my head.’ We lived the life of brother and sister.” He also complains that his wife is so fond of playing bridge, poker, and golf for high stakes that her losses contributed to his financial collapse last year. Examined by the wife’s counsel, pending the opening of the suit, Bishop said: “My wife preferred any diversion to loving me.”
