Lighter Stockings. Stockings have taken a decided turn towards lighter shades, both for sports and formal occasions (states a correspondent). Quite a new colour is “oatmeal,” actually a beige with a brown tinge, which is intended to be worn with the new dark browns and all the brown and beige alliances. For light summer frocks and for sports a colour called “pepper” has been evolved—beige with a brown cast and a tinge of yellow. With the new greys, green or black, there is “grasshopper,” a subtle blend of grey and pink which is very attractive. Another brown-beige with a tinge of pink is suitable for afternoon wear; its warmth suggests, too, that it will look well for light cruising frocks. A lighter edition, a little more sandy in tone, is one of the best shades fc- the whites, beiges and browns, and more vivid shades which are so popular for holiday anJ cruising clothes.

Dull surfaces are still smarter than brilliant ones. And for spectator sports fish-net lisle thread stockings are popular.
