OPUNAKE HARBOUR AFFAIRS
FORMER CHAIRMAN RESIGNS. HIS WORK EULOGISED. Mr. J. A. Pettigrew, a member of the Opunake Harbour Board for many year* and chairman for a year prior to the election of Mr. J. S. Hickey, the present chairman, wrote forwarding his resignation as a member of the board at last - night’s meeting, stating that he had intimated that he would do so at the annual meeting. In moving that the resignation be accepted with regret the chairman stated that he recognised that Mr. Pettigrew had had an unenviable time as chairman of the board, seeing thae there were two sections with conflicting convictions, and that he was making a last stand for those who believed that they should have a harbour. He certainly had the sympathy of the speaker while he held that position. As one 'of those who had been associated with Mr. Pettigrew on the board for many years Mr. T. P. Hughson added his praise of Mr. Pettigrew. He had always been faithful in his attendance at meetings and had always taken his part in looking after the business of the board, he said. Any committee work entrusted to him had always been given faithful attention. He certainly recognised the need for the harbour and put his very best into it while a member and chairman of the board. Mr. D. Mourie said that during the brief time he had been on the board he fully recognised the faithful manner in which Mr. Pettigrew had attended to the business f the board. Mr. Sheat alco expressed regret at the resignation of Mr. Pettigrew, who, as chairman of the board certainly had a difficult situation to deal with. The motion was carried and it was decided to notify the Egmont County Council of the resignation so that a member could be appointed to fin the vacancy.
