“I just heard a whiz, and then I stopped a motor-car with my ribs,” stated a witness in the Magistrate’s Court at Auckland, in describing an accident in which he had been injured. When asked if he had said anything to the driver of the car that had knocked him down, the same witness replied, “How could I? I was unconscious.”
It will probably be a year before the beneficiaries, under Mrs. Amelia BullockWebser’s bequest of £70,000 for the provision of retiring pensions to supplement existing pensions for the clergy of the Christchurch diocese, will actually receive the benefits, according to Mr. E. G. Hogg, chairman of the Clergy Pension Trust Board. He stated that he had no official information, but he believed that, as Mrs. Bullock-Webster had left property in Great Britain, Canada and New Zealand, the winding-up of the estate would be tedious and expensive. So far full details of the bequest had not been received.
Mention of the fact that the rise of stimulants at the Auckland hospital has increased enormously in the past month compared with the previous month was made by the chairman of the Hospital Board,-Mr. W. Wallace, at its last meeting. He pointed out that 135 more ounces of brandy had been consumed last month and 30 more bottles of stout had been used. In September, 503 bottles of stout were used, compared with 533 bottles last month. One bottle of champagne was shown on last month’s return. Dr. J. W. Craven, medical' superintendent, said the returns of. stimulants had all been carefully checked.
