DEATH OF MR. P. TARRANT

WELL-KNOWN ON WAIMATE PLAINS. Mr. Patrick Tarrant, an old and respected identity of the Waimate Plains, died suddenly at Otakeho on Tuesday evening. Mr. Tarrant was bom in County Cork, Ireland, in 1855 and came to New Zealand at the age of 16 years. After spending several years in the South Island he came to Hawera. where he was married in 1883 to Miss Kate Evans. He then went to Manaia, where he has lived continuously ever since. Mr. Tarrant was present at the first hand sale at Manaia in 1882, and at the Manaia jubilee last year he was one of the eldest identities present. When the Waimate Plains were first opened Mr. Tarrant was engaged in road contracting. For the past 25 years he acted as ranger for the Manaia Town Board and the Waimate West County Council, and on the day of his death he was still conscientiously .carrying out his duties as ranger. ■ Mr. Tarrant, in his earlier days took a! keen interest in athletics and trotting. He is survived by two daughters, Mrs. E. Cruickshank, Hawera, and Mrs. Stephens, Lower Hutt, and one son, Mr. W. P. Tarrant, Hawera, and 16 grandchildren. One son, Charlie, was killed on active service. There was a large and representative attendance at the funeral at Manaia cemetery yesterday, the funeral service at the church and the graveside being conducted by the Rev. Father Butler. Mr. Tarrant was a member of the Hibernian order and there was a large attendance of members in regalia. The pallbearers were Messrs. F. Mourie, W. Bourke, W. F. Warren, P. M. Havill, J. A. G. Cosgrove and L. Hughes. PATEA EVENING ATHLETICS. SEASON’S SECOND RUN. Twelve events were contested on the Patea Domain on Wednesday evening, when the second programme of the season was held. Mr. C. J. Gardiner was assisted by members of the club committee at starting and finishing points. The fixture attracted a considerable number of spectators. A pigeongram stamp used in the Great Barrier Island-Auckland service is in the possession of Mrs. A. Walker, Milmoe Street, Hawera. Car Poised Over Bank. A Waverley motorist’s car left the road on the Hawera side of the Manawapou hill owing to a steering gear defect and hung precariously over the steep bank. Oil and Stones. A Hawera merchant received an unpleasant surprise yesterday morning when on opening a case of bottles of oil, imported from France, he found that there were far fewer bottles than there should have been, 1 the gaps in the case being filled with stones.
