A correction of the belief that Mr. J. S. Murray was responsible for two rejected schemes for improving the Hawera sewer outfall was made by the Mayor of Hawera, Mr. J. E. Campbell, to the Press yesterday. The third scheme, which, the council adopted, was Mr. Murray’s but the statement issued to the Press after the council’s discussion in committee did not make it clear that the others were not. Other persons suggested to the council the plans known as No. 1 Scheme (which provided for a sloping tunnel) and No. 2 Scheme (which provided for a vertical shaft and discharge tunnel). The only scheme evolved by Mr. Murray was No. 3, which had been adopted by the council.' Mr. Murray and Mr. J. Rowe, the borough foreman, had given estimates of the costs, which involved an expenditure which was deemed by the council to be too high. Subsequently Mr. Murray had submitted to the council a scheme which he had evolved himself after going over the ground thoroughly for the purposes of arriving at his estimates of costs of the two first-mentioned schemes. His scheme—known as No. 3had been 'referred by the . works committee to the general committee and finally to the council, and was adopted. There • were several considerations which influenced the council to adopt the -No.. 3 scheme. In the first place it was deemed desirable to inquire into the matter of connecting the new sewer pipe with the old outfall. On investigation it was found that the old outfall would probably not withstand the discharge' of the new pipe. The -cost of repairing the old vertical pipe was estimated at £4O. In addition it was necessary to install a manhole at a cost oi £2O Thus it could be seen that it was going to cost £6O to make th- old outfall effective in operation for , the proposed new line of sewer pipes. Rather than spend £6O on the old outfall it ■..'as deemed preferable to construct a new outfall designed to over come the erosive action of the stream which empties over the cliff near the outfall and to give a greater measure of permanency. The adopted scheme removes the erosive action, enables the vertical pipe over the cliff to be securely anchored at top and bottom and provides ample capacity for the outlet of both stream and sewer. The total extra cost, after allowing £73 for pipes and bends which had previously been decided upon as necessary, and £6O for urgently required repairs and the manhole, would be something less than £lOO. normanby horticuture. addition to buildings. A meting of the Normanby Horticultural Society was held on Wednesday evening, Mr. T. J. Allan presiding, over an attendance of about 30 members. The proposed additions to the society s building were discussed and the president reported having met the members of the town board to ascertain whether it would be possible to procure the services of some unemployed workmen for the building. The reply was that relief workers could not be employed on such work. ~... It was decided to erect an addition along the right-hand sidj of the hall, the work, to be carried out .by means of working-bees among the members at a date to be arranged later. Opinions were expressed that the expenditure for materials only would be amply justified by the saving on tent hire etc. for the shows. , . x It was decided that the society required 100 specimen vases similar to a sample exhibited by the secretary. Constable F. Fidgeon offered to donate 50 of these and was accorded a hearty vote of thanks. It was decided to purchase the remaining 50. It was decided that the members of the ladies’ committee whose husbands were financial members should be made honorary members of the society. Lengthy discussion took place regarding the letting of the horticultural hall for dances or other public gatherings, opinion being decidedly divided on the matter. It was finally, decided to let the hall to applicants approved of by the president and secretary at a fixed charge. The action of the president and secretary in letting the hall on previous occasions was approved by the meeting. An application from the Ketemarae Maori Women’s Institute for the use of the hall for one afternoon a month was granted, the members agreeing that. either. institute might use the hall in the day time.
