WOMEN PRISONERS

CAMP SYSTEM PROPOSED. NEW SOUTH WALES SCHEME. The New South Wales Minister of Justice, Mr. Martin, has under consideration a scheme for reform concerning the imprisonment of women in the State gaols, especially at Long Bay. A scheme, based on the principle of a camp system, to give women prisoners a more hopeful outlook on life, may be introduced. There is 100 acres of land adjoining the Long Bay gaol, and a portion of this will probably be used for the establishment of a prison camp ■ for women, who will be permitted to use their time and energy in growing flowers and rearing fowls. There is at present accommodation in the women’s portion of the Long Bay gaol for 80 prisoners. When the camp scheme is launched a portion of the buildings now u*«d by the women may be used as additional accommodation for men.
