FALSE CINEMA FILM. • KING GEORGE IN A “FAKE.” When the King opened the World Economic Conference at the Geological Museum, South Kensington, London, in June, British news-reel companies were not allowed to make a record of the historical speech, nor was permission granted to them to make a film of the event. Millions of filmgoers in America, however, have been shown what purports to be a film of the opening ceremony. Apart from the King’s voice, the whole of this film is a “fake,” says a London newspaper. First on the screen appears a picture of the Geological Museum —taken from a picture postcard. Then the King is flashed on the screen. Dressed in military uniform, His Majesty is smiling broadly. ’ Actually at the opening ceremony the King wore morning dress and was very grave, as befitted the importance of the occasion. The pictures of the King used in the American “fake” are cut from a film made at least ten years ago. The speech, the only genuine thing about the picture, was made into a sound film from the relayed 8.8. C. transmission. Huge crowds are shown at the ceremony. But they were not the people who greeted His Majesty on his arrival at the Geological Museum. It is a far larger crowd than that. Actually it is a crowd scene of a demonstration in Hyde Park! The newspaper says: “This ‘fake* film is still being shown throughout America, and millions of people have been cheated into the belief that it is an authentic representation of one of the most important events of the century. It will not be publicly shown in this country.”
