UPWARD TREND SEEN IN BRITAIN. MORE THAN HALF WORLD TOTAL. By Telegraph—Press Assn.—Copyright. London, Oct. 17. The upward trend in British shipbuilding which has been observed since the beginning of the year continues, according to Lloyds’ quarterly returns for the three months ended September 30. The tonnage under construction on that date was 303,762 tons, which is 65,329 tons above the corresponding period of the previous year. Motor-ships accounted for 87,294 tons of the total. The tonnage under construction abroad is 452,990, of which motor-ships represent 326,801 tons; which is slightly above last June quarter’s total. The leading foreign countries are:— France . 95,838 tons Japan .............. 85,570 tons Swden 71,440 tons Holland 40,862 tons Germany 30,300 tons Fifty-seven thousand tons of the above shipping being built in Britain is intended for registration abroad or for sale. Twenty-two oil-tankers of 149,604 tons are being built, of which motor driven tankers amount to 131,304 tons. Sweden is the busiest in these.
