MISS KAY’S GREAT GOLF

RECORD WITHOUT PARALLEL EIGHTH VICTORY IN MELLSOP CUP. DOMINION GOLF CHAMPIONSHIPS. QUARTER-FINAL GAMES PLAYED. By Telegraph—Press Association. Wanganui, Last Night. With a wind of almost gale force encountered at the more exposed holes on the Belmont course to-day conditions were not as favourable for continuation of the New Zealand ladies’ golf championship tournament as was the case on the earlier days. The scores, which managed to remain near the eighties earlier in the tournament, soared up to the late nineties and in some instances reached three figures. Even the leading players, most of whom did not go out till later in the afternoon and thus encountered the full force of the wind, found themselves returning expensive cards in the Donnelly Cup match. There were really no surprises in the fou.Nh round of the championship, save that Miss Barns-Graham, a very promising young Gisborne player, took Miss O. Kay to the 19th. before the issue was placed beyond doubt. Miss Currie turned on her best golf and accounted for Mrs. Williams 4 up and 3. Miss Gaisford was always up in her match With Mrs. Collinson, though the Palmerston North player gave her some anxious moments until the game ended at the 17th. In the match between. Mrs. Stout and Mrs. Blain, both of Wellington, the former won at the 17th. .2 and 1. Following on after the fourth round players in the championship came the Donnelly Cup contestants,. playing over 18 holes in stroke play. This match also counted as the third of the series for the Mellsop Cup aggregate. Miss E. Fleetwood, Christchurch, proved the winner, returning a net score Of 76, reduced by a handicap of 17. Returning a card of 85 for the Donnelly. Cup Miss O. Kay thus had an aggregate of 242 for the Mellsop Cup, hef coronation medal round being done in 78 and her L.G.U. challenge match figures being 79. This makes the eighth win in succession for Miss Kay in connection with the Mellsop Cup, a record without parallel in the two decades over which the trophy has been contested. Mrs. G. Williams, it may be noted, won the Mellsop Cup on no fewer than seven occasions at intervals, but Miss Kay’s victories have been registered in successive years.

As was befitting a player who had broken the course record in the Coronation medal round Mrs. Cook, Castlecliff, filled the role of runner-up, but her card was an expensive one of 90, making her aggregate 250, eight strokes behind Miss Kay’s. Two strokes further back came Miss Gaisford, with another semi-finalist in Mrs. Stout tieing with Miss Barns-Graham with 255. The club teams’ match played in conjunction with the Donnelly Cup match was won by the ManawatU A team with a total of 360, four strokes tetter than the Wellington A teatn’s 364, with Hawke’s Bay next with 368. The leading teams were:— Mahawatu A (Miss Gaisford 85, Mrs. Cook 90, MisS Helean 92, Miss Currie 93); total 360. Wellington A (Mrs. D. Wilson 98, Mrs. Stout 82, Mrs. G. Williams 95, Miss Hanson 89); total 364-. Mellsop Cup for competitor returning best aggregate scratch score of three rounds of stroke play in coronation medal, L.G.U. challenge ■ bowl and Donnelly Cup:—

The draw for to-day’s ladies’ amateur championship semi-finals is:—Miss Currie v. Miss Gaisford; Mrs. Stout v. Miss O. Kay.
