LABOUR’S CANDIDATE
MR. P. C. WEBB FOR BULLER. NATIONAL EXECUTIVE’S CHOICE. By Telegraph—Press Association. Wellington, Oct. 17. The national executive of the Labour Party has issued the following statements: — “A meeting of representatives of all the trade unions and the Labour Party branches in the Buller electorate was held at Westport during the week-end. The Hon. Mark Fagan, M.L.C., represented the national executive of the party. The question of a successor to the late Mr. H. E. Holland as Labour candidate for Buller was fully discussed, and it was decided to submit four names for consideration of the national executive, with which, according to the Labour Party’s constitution, rests the final decision in respect to the selection of a candidate at a by-election. The representatives present unanimously resolved to support the nominee selected by the national executive. “The four names forwarded were Messrs. P. C. Webb, J. Smeaton, R. Holland and J. Thom. The national executive met this morning, and two of the men whose names were submitted by the Westport meeting were not available as candidates. Mr. P. C. Webb was selected and will contest the seat in the interests of Labour.”
