FROM TRACK AND STABLE

HORSES HOME FROM SYDNEY

GOLDEN HAIR AT MELBOURNE.

RED MANFRED’S PROGRAMME.

(By

“Hurry On.”)

The Martian mare Left, dam of Gaine Carrington and Peter Jackson, has been sent to Christchurch to be mated with the Son-in-Law horse Philamor. This sire is closely related to Medieval Knight, who recently won the Middle Park Plate, one of England’s most important two-year-old classics. A Smart Hack.

Among the acceptors for the Waikato Hunt meeting next month is the Lapidary four-year-old Try Luck. So far he has raced only on two occasions. He won two events in one day at Rotorua last season. In both races he made the opposition look very cheap and showed himself to possess pace well above the average. He is a full brother to that good but unsound horse Gay Lap.

Now at Melbourne. The Hawera trainer O. Cox is now at Melbourne with the Limond filly Golden Hair. She did not make the progress expected of her after her arrival in Sydney but is now reported to be doing well. Her immediate objective is the V.R.C. Oaks, which takes place on the third day of the Melbourne Cup meeting at Flemmington early next month.

Not Suited by Climate. The Sydney climate did not agree with the three-year-old Gay Seaton, who was taken across by A. D. Webster, and he will be returning to the Dominion shortly. Gay Seaton raced consistently in the Auckland province last spring. He started seven times and was only once out of a place. He is by Gay Shield from Persis, the dam of Persham, and is owned by Mr. C. Matthews, Hamilton.

Back Home Again. Several of the New Zealand horses who have been racing in Sydney returned home by the Marama to Wellington on Monday. Inflation, who was troubled by his old ailment after winning two races, will probably be turned out for a lengthy spell. Another who is' not likely to race for some time is Cottesmore. The third member of the contingnent was Bay Tree, who failed to reproduce his good form of the national meeting at Riccarton. Autopay is due to return next week.

Eclated to Comprls. The Riccarton trainer C. Davey has recently taken up two two-year-olds on behalf of Mr. P. F. Campbell. One is a colt by Paper Money from Halina, dam of Best Friend and grandam of Cpmpris, and the other is a brother to Davblo, by Pombal from imported Imprudence. The former was bred by Mr. Campbell, who purchased Halina from the Elderslie Stud, and the Pombal youngster was secured cheaply at the Trentham sales. Both are well grown and show a lot of promise.

A good Start. .• Star Artist’s win was a happy start for A. J. Julian in his new position as private trainer to Mr. Reid, states a Northern writer. Years ago Julian had many trotting successes for Mr. Reid with Eccentric, Miss Rolfe and Medusa, and more recently he trained the hurdler Prince of Orange, but this was the first horse he had saddled up since moving from Ellerslie to Mr. Reid’s establishment at Te Rapa. Star Artist, then a foal at foot, was purchased with her mother, Comedienne, dam also of High Comedy, for 220 guineas in January, 1931. Comedienne now has a yearling filly by Whirlwind and a colt foal by Hunting Song. Of Mr. Reid’s other brood mares the English-bred Legality, dam of Bambury, has a filly foal by Chief Ruler, while Loma Doone has a yearling colt by Acre and this season has been mated with Chief Ruler. Lady Whilrwind has been sent to Vaals. " Red Manfred’s Next.

The Wanganui Guineas’ winner Red Manfred is due to make his next appearance in the Trentham Stakes on Saturday, and as this event is run with set weights, the bay will have many friends. A strong opponent may be the southerner The Masquerader, who led the field home in the Dunedin Guineas. Red Manfred' also figures in the Harcourt Cup, a Weight-for-age mile and a-quarter race on the third day of the meeting. According to the latest issue of the New Zealand Racing Calendar, the register of joint interests shows that a registered partnership exists in Red Manfred between' Mrs. Curie and Davis, as from August 5, 1933, to July 31, 1934. The partnership is probably not a 50-50 division of interest (particulars are not given), but there must certainly be an agreement between Red Manfred’s owner and trainer requiring registration as a partnership under the Rules of Racing.

Betting in America. There is a tremendous amount of starting price betting in America, where, as elsewhere, some jockeys have a strong following. A Chicago exchange stated recently that when a jockey named Westrope rode nine winners in two days at Hawthorne in August it cost the New York leviathan bookmaker F. Erikson £30,000. It is said that that seeming setback meant nothing to Erikson, who is rated a millionaire several times over, and is credited with having 500 agents working in Greater New York and Eastern New Jersey, and no bet is too big for them. A settlement is made with these agents every thirty days, winnings being divided on a 50-50 basis. A couple of years ago Erikson paid £5OOO for the release of a relative kidnapped in mistake fdr himself. Since then Erikson has has a couple more expensive experiences with the kidnapping brigade. There is certainly much more danger attached to being a rich bookmaker in America than in Australia. Trainer Warned.

L. M. Manson, trainer of Tavern Knight, was called before the Avondale judicial committee on Monday for striking the horse over the head. Tavern Knight was left at the post and the incident was alleged to have Occurred after he returned to the birdcage. Manson was warned that if there was any repetition of his behaviour the committee would recommend the licensing committee of the New Zealand Racing Conference to withdraw his license. L. J. Ellis, rider of Sporting Blood, was cautioned for cutting in a trifle too quickly after the start of the Nursery Handicap. Racing Fixtures. October 19, 21, 23—Wellington R.C. LA CROWN OUTSTANDING * FAST WORK ON HAWERA TRACKS. CANDIDATES FOR WAVERLEY. Frequent showers hampered track' work at Hawera yesterday, when the tracks were fairly fast. The galloping was very interesting, the outstanding effort of the morning being credited to La Crown. Practically all the fast work was done on the plough. . Friesland was first out and sprinted a couple of furlongs on the two-year-old trad: in 26is. He Showed slight signs of lameness after Working. Green Linnet (Sheild) and Weatherzane (Feasey) had a length to spare from Round Table (Brough) after six furlongs had been covered in Im. 18Js., the first half mile in 51 l-ss. Green Linnet’worked satisfactorily. The maidens Weatherzane and Round Table pleased. The latter will take his place in the field for the Wilson Highweight in preference io the maiden .at Waverley, and should be much better suited by the extra furlong.

Ingenuity (J. M. Pine) surprised by finishing half a length in front of Flying East (Edgecombe) over half a mile in 51 3-ss. The time was nothing out of the ordinary but Ingenuity showed a decided improvement on any of her previous work. La Crown (Sheild) ran right away from Chief Line (Feasey) to register Im. 30s. for seven furlongs. Sectional times were: Three furlongs 37J5., half a mile 49 3*55., five furlongs Im. 2Js. It was the smartest gallop recorded over this distance for a considerable time and points to La Crown being particularly fit at present. In fact she is galloping better now than she has ever done, and her prospects for Waverley and other approaching meetings appear bright. Chief Line was outclassed and at no part of the. trial did he look like finishing on terms with the Lackham mare, eventually being about ten lengths behind. Gibraltar (Feasey) moved sluggishly over a mile at working gallop pace, the last five furlongs occupying Im. 9Js. He rarely hits out well when exercised Unaccompanied.

Don Erma (J. M. Pine) and March Alone (Conway) schooled together over a round of the hurdles. Don Erma jumped safely throughout but March Alone was rather disappointing. He did not bowl into his fences as he usually does and the rouhd was not a fast one. Don Erma is suffering from a slight cold. He is to be. ridden at Waverley by J. M. Pine, who will be having his second mount in a hurdle race. The Waverley Cup candidates Havering and Richfield were sent seven furlongs together. They had very little pace on until the final part, and the time, Im. 34 l-55., was not impressive. As was to be expected both horses finished very strongly. They were on terms when the post was reached. On the trial grass the Hunting SongSpotlight colt (Sheild) was a length clear of the Hunting Song—Camiola colt (Feasey) at the close of two furlongs in 26 2-ss. Benedictine (J. M. Pine) was sprinted down the straight. It was his first fast work and he strode along boldly. On the inside plough The Tiger, St. Clara, Paparua and Calamine did steady pace work. Oriel and Sandlark used the main plough, while Silver Wings and the Colossus youngster were exercised on the two-year-old track. Owner-trainer C. Jackson left for Wellington yesterday with Aga Khan and Diagano.
