SWIMMING BATHES REPAIRS.
MORE EXTENSIVE THAN THOUGHT. The condition of the Hawera swimming baths was worse than anticipated, the Mayor, Mr. J. E. Campbell, reported to the Borough Council on Monday. The seating, diving boards and shute were unsafe prior to renovations being made. The cost to date was £llB 14s 2d. Mr. Campbell said it was a wonder there was not a serious accident. The baths now might not be everything that was desired but were at least safe. The lighting installation, however, was in a dangerous condition, and if something was not done would have to be taken out. It was decided to spend £l2 on the lighting provided the Hawera Swimming Club made a contribution of £5. Community Stores Ltd.’s application for the relaxation of a by-law permitting the erection of a sign right across the footpath was not granted. Permission to erect two shelters at the club’s expense was granted the Park Croquet Club. Facilities for. decorating the streets during the Egmont show were granted the A. and P. Association. The works committee reported that it would further consider the adoption of the Bradford method at the rubbish dump. The method was to build a retaining wall about five feet six inches I high at the bottom of the gully. Leading }to this a . temporary road would be (made. Earth from the slope was taken and placed against the inside of the wall before dumping commenced. Empty tins and bags could be filled and utilised, and then dumping commenced with heavy material at the bottom. When an area had been filled within about nine inches from the top earth again was used to finish off. This system continued until the area contained by the wall was filled, thus forming a terrace. The retaining wall was then shifted up the gully, and in time the whole face would be terraced, when a further start could again be made at the bottom. The great advantage of this scheme was that no rubbish or paper was blown about and no burning need take place, all the refuse being weighted down with earth each day.
FRASER ROAD ACTIVITIES. CARDS, CRICKET AND GOLF. The first public flag 500 evening in the district was held in the Fraser Road hall on Friday. The game proved so popular with those present that it was decided to dispense with the usual dance in order to allow play to be continued. The task of the committee in arranging the evening was rendered easy by the generosity of Mr. and Mrs. Trewick, Who lent, all the flags and colours used. The prizewinners were Mesdames Jennings and Sharpe, Messrs I. Campbell and F. Mc- •' Garva, who won after cutting with Mesdames Thomson and Trewick, Messrs E. Gibson and A. Sharpe. Mokoia scored a decisive win on the first innings in a cricket match played against Fraser Road at Fraser Road. In the first innings Mokoia scored 117 runs. Boesley played an attractive innings to score 49, which included three sixes. Percy 19, J. Hawkin 19 and N. Hawkin 14 were the other double-figure scorers. Bowling for Fraser Road J. Pullen was unchanged throughout the innings and secured six wickets, while S. Death three wickets and A. Newell one wicket accounted for the remainder. Boesley (four wickets) and Walsh (four) proved too clever with the ball for Fraser Road, whose first innings yielded only 36 runs, J. Pullen being top scorer with nine. Fraser Road followed on and at call of time had scored 51 for six wickets (J. Pullen 37 not out). H. Kibblewhite (three wickets) and Boesley (two) were Mokoia’s most successful bowlers.
Tire new Mount View golf links have been completed by Mr. A. E. Grace, Hawera. The committee intends holding a working bee to prepare the greens and the opening will be held on Labour Day. Members intend playing all through the summer so that by next winter they should have sufficient knowledge of the game to challenge other country clubs.
