DETERMINATION OF SEX
EFFECTS OF STARVATION. EXPERIMENTS WITH INSECTS. . By Telegraph—Press Assn.—Copyright Rec. 10 p.m. London, Oct & Discussing the conclusions reached independently by Australia and by entomogolotical laboratories in Britain regarding the effect that the sex ratio c£ insects can be markedly influenced by partial starvation of the larvae, Professor W. J. Munro, Imperial College of Science, told the Morning Post that the experiments, chiefly with the so-called flour beetle, provided clear proof that in at least one form of life the sex could be influenced by outside, factors, and this was done after fertilisation. “Suppose the results were applied to human beings,” said Professor Monro, “it wo,uld be possible that there would be a preponderance of male births in wartime due to a food shortage. Equally the modem slimming of women might make the effect felt. Admittedly these are speculations, but in the present state of knowledge we ought not to dose our minds to anything.”
