Twenty-one lives were lost when the Greek steamer Annoula sank in a hurricane off the North Carolina coast on Saturday last. Five survivors reported to-day after landing from a rescue vesGeorge Couvielos and four members of the crew in a lifeboat were picked up on Sunday by the steamer Montello 110 miles north-west of Bermuda after drifting for 60 miles. Captain Couvielos said he called the radio operator on Saturday morning to send an SOS. Mountainous waves swept over the ship, throwing him into the sea, where he and two others were picked up by two sailors who managed to get out one of the ship’s lifeboats. All others of the crew were drowned.
