REHOUSING A MILLION

BRITISH SLUM ELIMINATION

LOCAL AUTHORITIES’ ENERGY

CAMPAIGN’S GOOD RESULTS

CAPITAL OUTLAY £95,000,000

(British Official Wireless). Rec. 5.5 p.m. Rugby, Oct. 5. The Minister of Health (Sir E. Hilton Young), who a few months ago called on local authorities to prepare a scheme for the total elimination of slums within five years and the provision of alternative accommodation, reports that the first stage of the campaign has given good results. Most local authorities have taken up the task with energy and vision and he already has received a return covering three-fifths of the population. The estimated totals from these returns provide for the clearance of 210,000 houses and rehousing about 1,050,000 people in five years. During the past ten years only 20,000 slum houses have been cleared and that effort is now being multiplied by twenty. The cost will represent a total capital outlay in five years of £95,000,000, or £19,000,000 a year. The Minister declares the Government is determined to see the matter through.
