OKAIAWA JUBILEE SOCIAL

HALL’S RECORD ATTENDANCE ENJOYABLE ENTERTAINMENT. LIST OF AFTERNOON VISITORS. The Okaiawa jubilee celebrations were continued on Friday evening, when a social-dance was held in the town hall. There was an attendance of nearly 500, and although the building was too overcrowded for comfortable dancing a happy time was 'spent. The hall was decorated with lemon and green streamers, and over the stage, picked out in large letters, was the inscription “18831933 Okaiawa jubilee.” The supper room was furnished as a lounge, many pictures having been lent for the occasion by the Betts family, and there the older people comfortably conversed over old times or played cards. An entertaining programme was presented, songs being contributed by Mr. F. E. Silver, Mr. G. P. Cottrell. and Mrs. Sunderland. Miss Kathleen Fairhall was the accompanist Miss Nancy Kent contributed elocutionary numbers and Miss Henry gave a hula dance. Poi dances were also given by a number of Maori girls. McNeill’s orchestra played the dance music and extras were given by Misses M. Guy and G. Brooke. Supper was served in a large marquee specially erected for the occasion, and the work was carried out by a committee of ladies and helpers who ably performed the arduous task of catering for such a large attendance—described as the hall’s record. Towards the conclusion Mr. J. C. Barclay said the jubilee had been a red letter day in Okaiawa’s history and the evening was a fitting conclusion to a most enjoyable time. He thanked the artists and. all who had. assisted to make the jubilee a success. Bouquets were presented to the artists. The door receipts were over £4O, and with the proceeds of the back-to-child-hood ball to-morrow it is anticipated all expenses will be covered. RECORD OF VISITORS.
