CHRYSANTHEMUM CLUB

BODY FOR EXCHANGE OF PLANTS. STRATFORD MEETING LAST NIGHT. The Central Taranaki Chrysanthemum Club was formed at an enthusiastic meeting of growers at Stratford last night. Mrs. W. J. Polson presided and explained that the primary idea was the encouragement of the growth of new varieties and the simplification of the problem of the expense by the application of a system of exchange. The chrysanthemum club was; not a new idea and was in operation in many other towns, said Mrs. Polson. The idea was that everybody should buy a chrysanthemum variety of good quality each year and subsequently arrange exchanges. Other clubs were willing to affiliate and exchange slips. There was no doubt the cult of the chrysanthemum was dying and it was hoped to revive it and show what Stratford could do. A scheme suggested was that Stratford should be the centre and there be groups also at places like Midhirst, Cardiff, Toko, Ngaere and Douglas. Mr. Pettigrew said there would be numerous fanciers who would grow chrysanthemums 'if only there were shows for them. It should be made plain that it was essential that all members buy plants every second year, otherwise / their cultivation would go back through lack of “new blood.” It was formerly decided to form the Central Taranaki Chrysanthemum Club. Officers were elected as follows: Patron, Mr. C. Rowe (Eltham); president, Mrs. W. J. Polson; vice-presidents, Dr. Doris Gordon and Mr. H. T. Cooper; secretary, Mrs. Grierson; treasurer, Mr. Kinnear Ross; committee, left to be elected later. Matters in connection with a possible show were discussed and it was decided to attempt suitable arrangements, in conjunction with other show organisations. Mrs. Polson explained that for members who knew little about chrysanthemum growing it was hoped to arrange for a leaflet giving information as to what to do and when. It was decided to hold a further meeting at which a lecture would be given and the club set more definitely on its feet. Arrangements for a speaker were left to Mr. W. Pettigrew. ANNUAL MEETING OF MEMBERS. The annual meeting of the Cardiff Tennis Club was well attended. The bal-ance-sheet disclosed a credit of £2. In his annual report the president (Mr. ’ H. Limmer) stated that the past season had been a successful one. The membership had remained constant and all members had availed themselves of every opportunity for piay. As a result there had been a marked improvement in the standard of play. The ladder' and button matches showed a marked improvement, most noticeably in the combined button matches. Commenting upon the small balance, Mr. Limmer drew members’ attention to the number of improvement, some of which had not been provided for at the previous annual meeting. The committee had seized the opportunity of obtaining cheap labour for felling trees on the back fence, fencing the shelter trees, levelling and grassing the back areas, removing banks, erecting new netting at the southern end, staying all the netting posts and marking the court in alumin--lUThe club captain stated that although the teams had not always been victorious in the 14 matches played the experience members had gained would be reflected in their play during the coming season.
