WHANGAMOMONA NEWS

DISTRICT NURSE’S SERVICES. Concern is felt at Whangamoniona at the decision of the Stratford Hospital Board not to assist the Whangamomona Medical Association in retaining the services of Sister R. McCarroll, district nurse. No public meeting had been held at Whangamomona before the medical association committee came to its decision, and it is felt by many residents that such a meeting to embrace Whangamomona and neighbouring towns should have been held to consider ways and means of retaining tire district nurse’s services. It is most necessary to have skilled medical aid in a centre 40 miles from the nearest doctor’s residence. Success of Camp. The single men’s unemployment camp at Waipuna is working successfully. The overseer of the Opunake camp when visiting Waipuna recently, said that the men at Waipuna were doing double the usual work accomplished. This reflects credit on the Waipuna overseer, Mr. A. Howley. A small social hall at the camp is almost completed, and a radio set will be installed shortly. Popular Residents Leave. Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Main, prior to their departure from the district, were guests of honour at a series of surprise parties. Mr. Main was also farewelled at a smoke concert held at Brereton s tearooms. The combined hockey and Rugby clubs also gave a farewell dance to Mr. and Mrs. Main and its success indicated the esteem in which Mr. and Mrs. Main were held by members of the clubs. The ladies’ hockey club, represented! by Miss Gill (captain) presented Mrs. Main with a sandwich set and a case of afternoon tea forks. Mrs. Main suitably acknowledged the gift. Audrey Newbold presented Mrs. Main with a beautiful bouquet of flowers, given by the athletic club. New Railway Personnel. ; The personnel of the railways department at Whangamomona has been considerably changed and reduced. The locomotive staff and guards have been dispensed with at Whangamomona as trains are no longer made up there. On the clerical staff Messrs. Stevens (stationmaster) goes to Stratford, and Ward (clerk) to Napier. These officers have been replaced by Messrs. G. Thomson (stationmaster) and A. Ewing (clerk). In the locomotive staff transfers have been made as follows: Mr. A. Max, to Stratford; Mr. J. Cunningham, to Frankton Junction; Mr. C. Parker, to Palmerston North; Mr. J. Bain, to Marton Junction; Mr. T. Todd, to Palmerston North. Messrs. Henderson and Bate (guards) have been transferred to Stratford.
