Mr. H. J. Grayson, Wellington, is visiting New Plymouth. Mr. J. McK. Wilson, Auckland, is staying at the Criterion Hotel, New Plymouth. _ The death has occurred at Johannesburg of Mr. Ernest Bird, Conservative member for Skipton (Yorkshire), the British Official Wireless reports. Mr. W. C. Green, Rahotu, went to Wellington yesterday to attend the meeting of the Control Board with Mr. T. Baxter. The Rev. J. Adams, Kingsland, Auckland, is to spend the week-end at Okato, in which parish he was till recently vicar, / Sir Henry Buckleton, manager of the Bank of New Zealand, this year completes 55 years’ continous service. The Press Association reports that the directors yesterday received and acceded to a request by him to be allowed, to retire on pension from the position of general manager at the end of the year. Mr. F. W. Dawson, the assistant general manager, will succeed Sir Henry Buckleton as general manager. Due honour was paid Mr. A- Allison, retiring commissioner of Government Life Insurance, at a function attended by Mr. P. Verschaffelt, Public Service Commissioner, departmental heads and others, the Press Association reports from Wellington. Mr. W. E. Arnold, the new commisisoner, who presided, announced that althought they were saying farewell to Mr. Allison they were not to lose him altogether as he had been appointed to an advisory position. The death is reported of Mr. Joseph Steiner, a well-known resident of Springdale, near Te Aroha. He came to New Zealand from Switzerland 30 years ago, settling first in Taranaki. Later he took up land at Hungahunga, where many of his countrymen are successful farmers. Fifteen years ago he moved to Springdale. Mr. Steiner was well-known as a practical farmer, and was always willing to give assistance and advice. He is survived by his widow, one son and one daughter. Mr. J. F. McDonald, who has accepted a position on the Star, the new newspaper at Melbourne, was yesterday afternoon made a presentation by his colleagues on the New Plymouth staff of the Taranaki Daily News. Mr. McDonald, Who has been a member of the literary staff for four years, during which he has been stationed at New Plymouth and Hawera, will leave New Plymouth this morning for Waverley and Tauranga. He will sail for Australia from Auckland on Friday.
