“BACK TO CHILDHOOD” BALL
SHOPKEEPER’S COMPLAINT. WHISKY IN FEEDING BOTTLES. Complaints in connection with the behaviour of certain men and women who attended the Back to Childhood Ball held in the Auckland Town Hall on August 8, which had been made by a shopkeeper in business near by, were reported by the president, Mrs. Hugh Kas- . per, at the Auckland district convention of the Women’s Christian Temperance Union. Mrs. Kasper said she had been approached by the shopkeeper concerner, who had asked that some action should be taken by the union. "The shopkeeper told me she had witnessed disgraceful scenes on the night of the ball,” Mrs. Kasper said. “She had occasion to order two couples away-from her shop on account of their disgraceful behaviour. The four people, one of whom was an elderly woman dressed in rompers, were intoxicated, and carried round their necks babies’ feeding bottles containing whisky.” Another member of the union, who attended a meeting in the Salvation. Army Hall on the night of the ball, said she saw intoxicated couples drinking in a motor-car. A resolution was passed stating that the convention viewed with alarm the disquieting statements relating to drinking at dances and public functions, especially among girls, and recommending that the City Council should be urged to see that adequate supervision was exercised at all such functions, particularly ithose held in.the Town Hall.
