SUCCESSFUL FANCY-DRESS. AID TO SCHOOL SPORTS FUND. The Rawhitiroa hall was well filled on Friday evening, when a children’s fancydress dance was held. Fifty children were present. There, was a wonderful array of costumes, the judges, Mr. and Mrs. N. D. Connell (Eltham) having an unenviable task to choose the prize-win-ners. The children spent a most enjoyable evening with dances and games, and they sang school songs at intervals. Following the children’s programme, the adults continued with dancing. The winners of the prizes, most of which were given by local friends of the school, were as follow:—Junior division: Best girl’s costume, Jean Martin (Old Mother Hubbard); best boy’s costume, Colin Cave (Aviator). Girl’s most original, Kathleen Walsh (Babe in the Wood); boy’s most original, Colin May (Cockerel). Senior division: Girl’s best, Eunice Cocker (Vivandiere); boy’s best, Jim Thame.(Friar Tuck); girl’s most original, Gwen Cocker (New Moon). Boy’s most original, Huon Craig (Tramp). Consolation prizes: Kathleen O'Connor (Pirate) and Roland May v (Mephistopholes).

The winners of the children's Monte Carlo dances were Ruth Cocker, Melva Bootten, Mavis Magee and Iris Martin. The head teacher, Mr. A. M. Wilson, thanked those who had helped to make the function such an outstanding success, mentio..ing particularly the judges, the donors of the prizes, the parents who provided supper and the band of willing helpers who had organised the children’s games and dances. As a result of the evening the school sports fund would benefit by over £5. Mr. G. V. Thame was master of ceremonies, and the musicians, who gave their services free, included Mesdames W. Hutchins and L. Gemhoefer, Miss Esther Cocker, Messrs. L. Ware, D. Silver and A. M. Wilson. A competition for a box of sweets, given by Mrs. W. B. Robertson, was won by Mrs. J. McLoughlin.

Huon Craig (Tramp). “Father Christmas” (Miss Gwen Ware) made a welcome appearance at supper time, presenting each child with a bag of sweets and taking notes 6f orders for Christmas gifts.

Married Defeats Single. The Rawhitiroa Cricket Club opened tire season on Saturday with a married v. single men’s match, the married team winning comfortably. Most of the players displayed good form for' an opening game and with further practice the club should field a strong team. The married men made 84 runs (Thame 27 and Stretton 15). The bachelors were dismissed for 29 and 15 (P. O’Connor 11, R. Bootten 14), married m en winning by an innings and 40 runs. D. Knuckey, Thame, Bootten and Stretton, for the married men, and P. O’Connor, Wilson, Hutchins and A. Jenkins for the bachelors were the successful bowlers. Personal and General.

Mrs. Howie, Wellington, is visiting her daughter, Mrs. R. Adams, Rawhitiroa.

Dr. Mary Champtaloup, district medical officer of health, paid an official visit to the Rawhitiroa school last week. A meeting will be called shortly to consider forming a tennis club in the district. A concrete court is available. Many residents are enthusiastic about the project.

Miss B. Dawes, Westmere, is staying with Mr. and Mrs. L. Prankerd.

Miss Gwen Silver is in Wellington on a holiday trip.

Mr. and Mrs. H. A. Wood spent the week-end at New Plymouth. Misses J. Welch and P. Taplin were guests of Mrs. D. Knuckey at the weekend.

Miss Loraine Howe is visiting Mrs. Adams.
