BYRD’S SOUTH POLAR TRIP
FINAL PREPARATIONS MADE. LITTLE AMERICA POST OFFICE. By Telegraph—Press Assn.—Copyright Rec. 10 p.m. Boston, Sept 25. Rear-Admiral Byrd’s supply ship Bear, of Oakland underwent its final preparations to-day preparatory to the start for the South Polar regions to-morrow. Foodstuffs and scientific instruments were placed aboard and the clearance papers were issued. The expedition flagship Pacific Fir has been re-named Jacob Ruppert in honour of a New York baseball magnate and brewer, who is one of the expedition’s principle sponsors. Rear-Admiral Byrd will leave on the Jacob Ruppert in about a week. He expects to overtake the Bear long before she reaches the base at Dunedin, which is expected to require about two months. According to dispatches from Washington the Post Office Department anounced that a post office will be established in Antarctica called “Little America.” This is one of the first official acts recognising the territory explored by Rear-Admiral Byrd as a United States possession.
