MARRIED COUPLE ON LONG WALK. • LIFTS SCARCE IN TARANAKI. A young married couple, walking from Auckland to Wellington, made a brief halt at Hawera on Saturday.

“No, we don’t want any publicity,” they said when accosted by a reporter. “We are looking for work, not notoriety.” After a little persuasion, however, they consented to talk and the man said feelingly: “Well, you might make it clear to Taranaki people that hikers do accept lifts.” He explained that it had taken them only two days to reach New Plymouth from Auckland but it seemed they would have to walk out of Taranaki. Lifts in the province were few and far between. They were not sleeping out, they said in response to a query. It was hard enough without that. Both carried ample packs and were looking. remarkably fit and cheerful. “What will you do when you get to Wellington ?” they were asked. “Get a job I” said both confidently. HAWERA SCOUTS ENTERTAIN. PARENTS SOCIAL EVENING. The Hawera Boy Scouts ’and Cubs held a successful parents’ social on Friday night. There was a large attendance and a special ■ welcome was tendered to the Manaia troop under Scoutmaster Payne. Warrants were presented by Conunissioner F. W. Homer to Group Scoutmaster Head, Scoutmaster T. Lay and Cubmistress D. Clement, who were congratulated on their work. The entertainment opened with a playette acted by the Cubs and arranged by Miss Clement. Drill exhibitions were given .by the Curlew and Tongahoe troops and Miss D. Britland’s pack played Cub games. The Tongahoe troop won a first aid competition and Mrs. Spragg’s choir won . a choir competition. \ “ TARANAKI REGIMENT. MARKSMEN’S BADGES PRESENTED. Marksmen’s badges won by members of the Hawera machine-gun and Lewisgun platoons of the Taranaki Regiment were presented on Friday night by the Mayor (Mr. J. E, Campbell) to the following officers and men:-—Marksmen’s machine-gun and marksmen’s Lewis-gun badges: Lieut. Gilliver, Sergeant G. McGlashan, Corporals R. Beatson and L. Holloway, and Privates E. Cropp, T. Duncan, K. McGlashan and J. Simpson. Marksmen’s machine-gun badge: Corporals G. Cruickshanks and C. H. Perrett, Lance-Corporal L. Graham, and Privates C. McGlashan, M. B. Shaw and C. L. T. Sharpe. Marksmen’s Lewis-gun badges: Captain A. W. Lawn, Lieutenant P. Coleman, Quartermaster Sergeant R. Wilson, Corporal J. Shaw and Privates E. A. Collins, C. T. Jones, A. J. Mullins, L. N. Milroy. PERSONAL ITEMS. Mr. T. Baxter, representative of the National Farmers’ Union of England, will be at Hawera on Wednesday. On Thursday he will visit dairy factories in the neighbourhood. GENERAL ITEMS. £2O For Boys and Girls’ Clubs. The maximum allowance of £2O has been allocated to the South Taranaki Boys and Girls’ Clubs by the Government, New Educational Institute Branch. Business in connection with the new Egmont branch of the New Zealand Educational Institute was fully discussed at a meeting of the central committee at Stratford on Saturday. Mr. D. G. Sherson (Manaia) presided. Routine branch business was transacted, and the report of the sub-committee on finance was adopted. PORT OF PATEA. September 24:—Arrived: M.v. Kapuni, from Wellington via Wanganui. In port: M.v. Inaha for annual overhaul. High water to-day: 1.5 a.m., 1.26 p.m. ADVERTISERS’ ANNOUNCEMENTS. A free lecture to be given to-night at the Carlton Rooms, Hawera, covers a most-interesting subject, that of heating and ventilation. The speaker has had considerable experience both in New Zealand and in America.
