AUCKLAND TO WELLINGTON
MARRIED COUPLE ON LONG WALK. • LIFTS SCARCE IN TARANAKI. A young married couple, walking from Auckland to Wellington, made a brief halt at Hawera on Saturday.
“No, we don’t want any publicity,” they said when accosted by a reporter. “We are looking for work, not notoriety.” After a little persuasion, however, they consented to talk and the man said feelingly: “Well, you might make it clear to Taranaki people that hikers do accept lifts.” He explained that it had taken them only two days to reach New Plymouth from Auckland but it seemed they would have to walk out of Taranaki. Lifts in the province were few and far between. They were not sleeping out, they said in response to a query. It was hard enough without that.
