MAORI GIRL’S DEATH

NO MEDICAL ATTENTION. FULL RELIANCE ON PRAYER. Tauranga, Aug. 31. An inquest was held at Mangatapu, near Tauranga, before Mr. A. F. Tanks, coroner, concerning the death of a Maori girl, Mama Raraku, aged 14 years. Evidence given by the girl’s father and step-mother went to show that the girl had been ill for about three weeks, but a doctor was not called, nor was the district nurse advised. The father, Raraku Te Hura, said he did not do anything for the girl. He was a Ratana follower, and their method was to pray. He notified another Ratana follower and he came and they prayed. They kept praying up to the time of the girl’s death on Monday evening. Dr. Stuart, who examined the body of deceased, said death had resulted from natural causes. The coroner returned a verdict accordingly. He admonished the parents and ...stated it was their duty in cases of sickness to notify the district nurse, whatever their awn views or might be. >■ -
