VISIT BY PRINCE

PROBABLE INVITATION. AUSTRALIA AND DOMINION. London, August 22. Although there has been no decision yet on the invitation for a member of the Royal Family to attend the Victorian centenary celebrations, there is a stiong possibility that the Earl and Countess of Athlone, who won great popularity during the Earl’s regime as Governor-Gen-eral of South Africa from 1923 to 1931, may represent the King. It would probably be more convenient for them to leave England in the near future than any of the King’s sons. Moreover, it might not be necessary to send' a warship or an extensive staff with them, as would have to be done with a Prince. ' , , It is understood that the New Zealand Government will' join the Commonwealth Government in its request for a visit by a member of the Royal Family in 1934-35. The New Zealand Governments invitation will be for a visit to the Dominion by a Prince after his Australian tour. An invitation from the New Zealand Government to the King will, it is believed, strengthen Victoria’s chances of having a Royal visitor for the centenary celebrations. The Earl of Athlone is Queen Marys brother. He was Governor-General of South Africa from 1923 until 1931. His wife is Princess Alice of Albany.
