INCREASE IN WAGES SOUGHT. APPLICATION TWO YEARS OLD. By Telegraph—Press Association. Wellington, Aug. 28. The Conciliation Council sitting opened to-day in the dispute of the cooks and stewards on coastal steamers, excluding Union Company vessels. The "application for an award was filed in 1931 and the parties sent to the Arbitration Court on certain clauses in March, 1932. Before the award was made the Act was amended and the case was referred back to' the council. This is the first meeting of the parties since the shipowners’ 10 per cent, cut and reduction in overtime from 2s to Is 3d an hour. The union asks for restoration of the first 10 per cent, cut and an additional 10 per cent, increase.
