NICKNAME FDR JARDINE

JOCULAR APPLICATION. "MONSTER FROM ANTIPODES.” London, Aug. 17. “The Monster from the AntipodesCaveman Douglas, the Killer,” was the jesting introciuction of D. R. Jardine by Sir Jolrn Squire, as chairman of a literary luncheon at Grosvenor House. In replying, Jardine said: “I have been called a notorious character, but there are quite a lot of us, although some, like Crippen, are no more.”

Jardine added that cricket was one of the few sports which had not been speeded up. “I say that with deference to the pace of the English bowling. It is a nice, leisurely pastime for players and spectators, but it is important in the hurried world of the future that the romance of sport should be adequately represented. “Many cricketers to-day write well about the green grass and the conversation of the crowd, but we want a genius who can accurately picture the Australian barracker in full cry.” Sir John, referring to the report that Jardine will never captain England again, said: “I know you all want him to continue skippering England for the next 10 years.” (Cheers).
