CARDS AND DANCE PARTIES. A euchre party held recently in aid of the hall funds was poorly attended. Prizes were won by Mrs. G. Hurley and Mr. George Collins. The last of a series of four, euchre parties was held in the Hurleyville hall by the Patea Coursing Club on Friday evening. A record crowds attended. Mrs. L. Hunt won both the prize for the evening and the ladies’ points prize. Mr. Dan Hurley was successful in annexing the points and evening prize for the men. Supper was served by the ladies and Mrs. Douglas supplied music for a long-night dance, which was well attended. The new dairy factory is now in full working order and the results to date are very gratifying. An increase of 75 per cent, in the output of cheese in comparison with the corresponding period of last year is reported by the manager. A seven-seater sedan car owned by Mr. L. Hunt, while being driven along Ball Road on Friday evening to Hurleyville overturned near the Alton dairy factory. The occupants escaped with bruises and scratches . The only damage reported to the car was broken windows. Mrs. Stone, Wellington, has been appointed sole teacher to the Hurleyville school in succession to Mrs. Fullarton, who. retires early in September. Mrs. Bankhead, Awatuna, is the guest of Mrs. Jack Hurley. Mrs. Nelson has returned from a lengthy holiday at Masterton and Wanganui. Miss Fullarton has been appointed assistant teacher at the native school at Te Teko, Bay of Plenty. Mr. James McGorman is holidaying in Central Otago. FUNERAL OF MRS. JOHNSTONE. The funeral of Mrs. A. C. Johnstone on Sunday at Otakeho was one of the largest ever seen in the district. Friends came from many parts of North and South Taranaki. A service conducted by the Rev. Solomon, Manaia, was held in the Otakeho Church, after which the long cortege moved to the cemetery nearby. The pall-bearers were Messrs J. C. Duff, H. Hartley, M. Langlands (sons-in-law), A. Fraser (Okaiawa), W. J. Bradford (Auroa) and E. Scott (Kapuni). There was a wealth of wreaths, special ones being sent from the Auroa Ladies’ Guild and the Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union. A memorial service will be held at Otakeho next Sunday. WAVERLEY GOLF CLUB. E. SAMPSON WINS BOGEY MATCH. Following is the result of the bogey match played by the Waverley Golf Club on Saturday: E. Nurse Janet Lilley, who has just passed further nursing examinations with honours, and who is nursing in the Hamilton hospital, is spending her holidays with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Lilley, Auroa. Mr. and Mrs. V. Illingworth, Wanganui, spent the week-end at Hawera. Tributes were paid to the memory of the late Mrs. D. McL’Dowie at herfuneral at Hawera on Sunday, the large attendance including many representatives of pioneer families. Services at St. John’s Church and at the graveside were conducted by the Rev. J. A. F. Watson. The organist (Mr. J. L. Rowe) played the Dead March in Saul as the congregation left the church. The pall-bearers were Messrs R. Boddy (a grandson), H. G. and ,C. D. Dickie (nephews), J. E. Campbell, J. O’Sullivan and L. Preece, and the chief mourners were Messrs W. McL’Dowie (Matapu), Alex Dickie (Wanganui), R. Boddy (Pio Pio), C. J. Dickie (Waverley) and Mesdames R. Bremer, A. G. Wallace and G. H. Graham (all of Waverley) and J. R. Hopkinson (Waitotara). GENERAL ITEMS. Wednesday Rugby Representatives. The Wednesday Division Rugby representatives to play Central Division representatives at Stratford on Thursday will be Hart (City), Savage (Ohangai), Guise (City), Reeve (Meremere), Tamu (Normanby), P. Emergencies: Back, Bishaw (Normanby), forward, Spiers (City). Reeve has been appointed captain. The team will assemble at one o’clock on Thursday. Car Catches Fire. A car caught fire at Hawera on Saturday evening but the flames were subdued with a chemical extinguisher before much damage was done. Stray Cat’s Predicament.

A stray cat got into an awkward situation in a Hawera boarding-house yesterday. It wandered inside and into a room where there was a grate. The chimney looked inviting so the cat climbed up, accidentally knocking the flap at the bottom of the chimney. Imprisoned thus the cat uttered shrill calls for help, much to the surprise of the staff, who engaged the help of a passer-by to remove the animal.

Relief Work in Hawera. Relief work was allocated to 154 Hawera unemployed under the No. 5 scheme for this week. The classification is nine A class, 101 B and 44 C.

Dogs Disturb Office. The serenity of a Hawera office was rudely disturbed last evening by conflict between a large Alsatian and a smaller dog of the collie type. The staff gave up its labours to interfere ,but the owners of the respective animals had separated them unaided. The only noticeable result was a large tuft of black hair on the floor.
