BUILDING BOOM AT HAWERA

FIFTY WORKMEN EMPLOYED. TWO MORE SCHEMES PROPOSED. Nearly 50 carpenters and labourers are at present employed at Hawera on work | under the No. 10 building scheme, and I there is a likelihood of 30 additional men being required when two proposed | building schemes involving a total, of £5OOO are put into operation. Application has been made, for the . Unemployment Board’s subsidy for these two schemes. The reconstruction of Messrs. George and Doughty Ltd.’s premises accounts for 11 carpenters and 9 labourers; 5 carpenters and 6 labourers are employed .in the. building of the new shops in High Street; '7 carpenters and one labourer in the remodelling of the High School hostel'; 3 carpenters and one labourer in the Para Rubber Co. scheme, and 3 carpenters in the building of a house in Wilson Street, making a total of 47 men. The bbom in building has eased the position with regard to unemployed carpenters and workmen considerably, but there are still numbers of local carpenters looking for work. HAWERA OPERA HOUSE. “MICHAEL AND MARY” TO-NIGHT. \. • • “Hell Below,” which has had a successful season at the’ Hawera Opera House, will, in response to many requests, be shown again this evening, but in the Grand Theatre. The principals in the big cast are the popular Robert Montgomerie, Jimmie Durante and Walter Huston. ’At the Opera House to-night a twonight season of “Michael and Mary” will be commenced. “Michael and Mary” is a plcturisation of one of A. A. Milne’s best known books, a charming and simple story of English life. The interpretation of the play is in the hands of Herbert Marshall, the well-known English actor, and his even better known wife, Edna Best. It will be remembered that Miss Best ran away frofn Hollywood and an excellent opportunity because she was home-sick. The performance which brought her before the New Zealand public was in “The Constant Nymph,” and in her latest film she does even better work.
