, PROGRESS IN AUSTRALIA. LARGE INCREASE IN LISTENERS. •; Good progress is being made in Australia with the popularising of broadcasting, stated Mr. C. Lloyd Jones, managing director of David Jones, Limited, Sydney, and chairman of the tralian Broadcasting Commission, who passed through Auckland by theW posa on Saturday. He said tharsmc*the commission had establish d about a year ago, he believed the public was obtaining better programmes. •‘ln Australia to-day," said Mr. Jane* ‘‘there are nearly 500,000 holders at licenses. Australia has the greatest percentage of radio license-holders to J»pu* lation of any part of the Empire. Last year 99,500 new licenses were issued, the greatest increase in any year sm<* the commencement of the broadcasting srvice.” The Federal Government, which created the commission, was erecting more relay stations throughout Aus* tralia in order to give better programme! and increased coverage to listeners.
