WENDY’S DRESSMAKERS
AN AFTERNOON DRESS. One of our older Wendy girls wants to make a dress for afternoons, so this week we’ll see how to set about a frock like the one pictured. You will require about four-and-a-half yards of flowered material—you can get pretty printed cottons very cheap, so the frock won’t be ruinously expensive ! A plain little bodice is joined
to a gathered skirt, the short sleeves are finished With puffs and there are _ two frills round the bottom bf the skirt. Measure across your chest and cut a piece of material ten inches wider, and twice your depth from shoulder to waist, for the bodice. Fold widthways and lengthways, and cut as shown iii-the diagram; The skirt is made .from three widths of material, and should reach from your waist to midway between knees and ankle's. From/the material left over, cut two strips for the puffs, and more strips for the frills. The puffs are twenty-foiir inches long and . four 'inches deep, while the Ms are three-and-a-half inches deep and half as long again as the measurement round the bottom of the skirt when it’s made up. Join the shoulder-seams and sew up the side seams of the bodice. Bind the neck-opening with bias-binding in one of the shades of the pattern. Sew up the short edges of the puff strips, gather along one ..side of each, and stitch % puff to the edge of each sleeve. Make, a narrow hem along the other side and .thread- elastic through it to fit your arm. Finally, if you like, you can. sew a band and bow of the bias binding round the sleeve where the puff is joined to it. Sew the seams of the skirt, and gather the top edge. Tack this to the bodice -regulating-the. gathers ..carefully,, and then join the two neatly together. , Join the short ends, of each frill strip, hem one edge, turn in the other and gather it on to a long thread. Sew one frill to the edge of the skirt, and the other above it to overlap - .slightly. The dotted line in-the diagram shows where the- upper frill; should come,, . : . Make’a sash from odd bits of material —and I’m sure you ?will be-pleased with veur new frock. . .. Wendy’s . Dressmaker.
