WOMEN’S INSTITUTE.

Whareroa: A large attendance was presided over by Mrs. Larcom. A competition for the best article made from cretonne to cost Is or less resulted; Mrs. Langdon (child’s beach hat) 1, Mrs. Larcom (stocking bag) 2, Mrs. George (a cushion cover) 3. Miss Ballantyne was the judge. An interesting demonstration was of making a mat of old stockings, given by Miss Adams. Afternoon tea was provided by tire hostesses, Mesdames Laing, Langdon, Larcom and Maule, Misses Paterson and Maule.

Inglewood: The fifth anniversary was celebrated on Wednesday, when over 100 members and friends were present. Miss Trimble presided. Miss Trimble was presented with a bouquet (the work of Mrs. Adnams) by Mrs. A. C. Feaver as a token of esteem. Items were given by Mesdames Faris and Oakshott (vocal solos), Mesdames Dawsie and Feaver (vocal duet) and Mrs. Braybrooke (elocutionary item). Mrs. Adnams spoke cn the Dominion conference. The gem of the programme was a play entitled “Oh! Mr. Symthe,” given by the Misses Trimble, Mesdames Dawsie, Adnams, Kivell, Harwood, T. Lindsay, Leech and Corney. Afternoon tea was in charge of the hostesses, Mesdames Crush, Ccdd, Bungay and Winter. Mesdames Dawsie and Braybrooke with helpers had worked well in arranging and decorating the long table with mauve table centres and mauve and yellow spring flowers. Miss Trimble performed the ceremony of lighting the five candles on the cake. Miss Trimble thanked those who had helped with the cake (which was threetiered, iced in white and lavender)— Mrs. R. Stuart, Mrs. Somerton and Mrs. Porter. Part of the cake was sold to help institute funds. A competition was won by Mrs. A. Codd, the prize being the top tier of the cake. Mrs. Braybrooke read a report on the activities of the arts and crafts circle.
