CONDUCT CRITICISED
ENTERTAINMENTS IN DUNEDIN. UNSEEMLY BEHAVIOUR. ' . Dunedin, Aug. 16. Some criticism of the conduct of recent public gatherings in the Dimedin Town Hall has been voiced during the past few days, and the matter was the subject of brief reference at a meeting of the city council to-night. When the report of the finance committee was under discussion, Cr. Shacklock asked if the attention of the chairman of the committee, Cr. Allen, 'had been drawn to the unseemly behaviour at certain recent entertainments at the Town Hal. Cr.. Shacklock said that the matter had certainly been brought under his own notice, and if reports .he had heard were true, he thought steps should be taken to see that such behaviour was not repeated.
Cr. Campbell: Quite right. Cr. Allen, replying, said- that his attention had been drawn to the unseemly conduct at entertainments and dances at the Town Hall on two. or three recent occasions. The committee allowed a limited quantity of liquor to be taken to these entertainments under supervision. It was very difficult, however, for' the corporation officials to control the behavour of adults at these entertainments.
If people were going to continue to abuse the privilege granted them, continued Cr. Allen, the committee would be compelled to withdraw the privilege. The attention of the police could be called to the matter, but unfortimately liquor was not always consumed in the Town Halt There was drinking in motor-cars outside the building, and this was purely a matter for the police. Now that the attention of, the committee had been called to the matter, members would be doubly careful when they issued licenses.
