YELLOW RIVER FLOODS

AMPLE WARNING SAVES LIVES. By Telegraph—Press Assn.—Copyright. Peking, Aug. 17. “China*s sorrow,” the Yellow River, has flooded over 2009 square miles of the province of Shantung. A foreign expert, returning here from the scene of the disaster, reports that a million and a half people are affected, but the loss of life is small owing to ample warning. Several towns were completely evacuated by the populace. Other persons including prisoners in gaols, took refuge on the mediaeval walls. Everywhere dykes are feverishly strengthened, and the gates of some cities are barricaded by sandbags. The river is now falling.
