WAITARA PUBLIC SCHOOL
MONTHLY REPORT TO COMMITTEE. TRAVELLING TEAMS PROBLEM. The . monthly meeting of the Waitara School Committee was held on Monday night, members present being Messrs W. B. Glasgow (chairman), L. Old, H. Purdie, A Chadwick, R. 'J. Armstrong, P. Appleby and A. J. Arms (secretary). The headmaster (Mr. R. S. Bullen) reported that he had put the daily dental inspection- into operation and believed it was already noticeable that many more children cleaned their teeth at home. He 'believed practically every child used a tooth brush at home, and he thought not a cleaner lot of mouths would be found in New Zealand. That was largely due to the action of the nurse, who had especially seen to the fifth and sixth standard pupils and given them a good start for the daily attention.
The roll was 379, and the average attendance to the end of last week 350. The attendance had not been as good as usual owing to the prevalence of seasonable colds. Miss Browne was absent on July 13 and 14 through sickness. The school was visited during the month by Dr. Mary Champtaloup. Referring to the transport of sports teams, the headmaster said it was a worry to him to find cars, particularly for basketball teams, and if the position could not be improved he would have to consider abandoning the outside games. The girls had been very keen, and they won the championship at New Plymouth on Saturday. The chairman suggested that the parents should 'be appealed.to, and perhaps some of them would, run their cars in turn to the basketball matches.
The basketball team that won the Deere Shield at the annual basketball tournament at New Plymouth were congratulated by the headmaster, who paid a tribute to Miss Martin’s coaching ability.
