DEEDS OF HEROISM
POSTMAN AND POLICEMEN. Hidden in the long list of honours in connection with the King’s Birthday are names whose significance can only be appreciated when the deeds that have been recognised are known. There is the postman, Frederick Chas. Webber, of Wiveliscombe, near Taunton, who was given the medal of the British Empire. When snowdrifts made it impossible for him to take out the motor-cycle he usually uses Webber had walked for 13 consecutive hours through 27 miles of hilly country and not only delivered the post but made the collection from every 'box. Patrick Dufiicy and Frank William Wood, who also received these medals, are two policemen—heroes of a fire at Chislehurst. When waiting for the brigade Dufiicy searched the blazing house and rescued a woman. While Wood made a way with a fire extinguisher Dufiicy followed again into the blazing house and the two carried out another woman who was bed-ridden.
