PARLIAMENTARY SESSION
SEPTEMBER 21 MENTIONED. WAITING FOR MR. FORBES. The expectation that Parliament' will meet on Thursday, September 21, is expressed in a Press Association telegram from Wellington. Although Parliament ( norrrially meets on the last Thursday in June (says the 1 New Zealand Herald), the routine has been upset in recent years through the holding of special sessions earlier in the year. Last year’s main session began on September 22, and lasted, with a seven weeks’ break at the New Year, until March 10. A coincidence is that the Prime Minister, the Rt. Hon. G. W. Forbes, is expected to reach Wellington on his return from the World Economic Conference in London on September 18. The Minister of Finance, the Rt., Hon. J. G. Coates, leader of the New Zealand delegation to the Ottawa Conference, returned to Wellington on the corresponding' date last year. . It had been suggested that Parliament should meet before Mr. Forbes’ return so that preliminaries could be completed and the way cleared for the real work of the session as soon as the Prime Minister resumed duty. The fact that that procedure is unlikely to be adopted suggests that the Government’s legislative programme is not heavy; otherwise, with last session’s experience in mind, it is unlikely that such a late start would be made. Members, especially those with farming interests, look with disfavour on sessions extending into the summer months. The indications are that strong efforts will be made to close the pending session before Christmas.
