LONDON’S NEW CRAZE

'RSN’NIOL AFTER 250 YEARS. A game of skill which was the rage of London in the seventeenth century has suddenly been revived, and the young people of Mayfair have already made It ‘heir newest craze. The game is called “tumble down dick,” and when it made its first appearance in 1684 Londoners “went mad” over it. For over a year it was the most popular pastime for all classes. ■ Then “tumble down dick” tumbled down from glory. Now, 250 years later, the game is the rage again. Young Mayfair already does not consider itsself properly dressed unless it has “tumble down wick” always with it. It is taken to dance clubs and sports meetings. Private tournaments are being held. In every smart West End club the clickety-clack of “tumble down dick” is heard. The makers predict for it as great a popularity as the “yo-yo;” Joined by a complicated series of tape, small squares of painted wood are made to run up and down each other, showing a different colour at each turn. The expert is the person who can manipulate them most smoothly and rapidly. “We are selling hundreds a day,” says a director of the firm which has sponsored the game. “They are made by ex-service men who are turning them out in thousands in anticipation of an enormous demand."
