Miss Mercedes Gleitze, who in 1927 swam from the French coast to Dover, this, morning began an unsuccessful attempt to swim the Channel from Dover to the French coast She hoped to reach France in 20 hours. After six hours she was swimming strongly about eight miles east of Dover, but abandoned her swim after eight hours owing to the rising wind and rough seas. She had covered 10 miles.
