“It is when we see work .of this nature that we must conclude there is a deplorable economic waste of skilled labour,” said Mr. F. M. Waters, chairman of the Manukau County Council, at the official opening of the Papatoetoe Town Board’s new offices. Mr. Waters’ remarks were made in connection with the furniture of the offices, which had been made by relief workers, the workmanship being of a very high standard. Mr. Waters said it was regrettable that men of such capabilities were only employed on unskilled relief works.

Advice that applicants for relief under the provisions of the Mortgagors’ Relief Act had the right to make successive applications for relief, was contained in a letter from the Minister of Justice received at the last meeting of the executive of the Manawatu Dairy Farmers’ Union. The letter stated: “Although there is no right to appeal to a higher court from the decision of a court hearing an application for relief, that does not affect the right of a mortgagor to make successive applications for relief by leave of the court. A successive application for relief is not an appeal, but is in the nature of a review.”

It was then intimated, on behalf of the Farmers and Vendors’ Association, that that organisation did not consent to the increase, but Mr. Cobbe expressed the opinion that the association would “fall into line.” The question has since been considered by the association, but it was intimated that the decision was not yet available for publication.
